Unbelievable as it may seem, the dodo wasn't all that different from the one depicted by Lewis Caroll in "Alice in Wonderland". Poor thing didn't have all that much going for it and it isn't any wonder that it didn't survive.
It lived on Mauritius, was heavy footed, its stomach scraped the ground, and it couldn't run or fly. The dodo did okay while there were no human inhabitants on the island, and no animal predators - but they were exitnct within 100 years of the Dutch discovering the island in 1598.
